5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic multi-day backpack, June 4, 2009

This is not your weekend pack; although, it can be used for that. This is for one or two week treks into the wilderness. For those purposes, this pack does the job very well. Although I have yet to use the hydration system option, it's there. It even has a usable and roomy detachable day pack.

Our family owns two of these packs. We do a lot of backpacking, and these packs have our highest praise. I really like the number of pockets on this pack that make it very easy to access gear. The main compartment is accessible from the front, sides and top.

The sleeping bag compartment is really nice. Misplaced your stuff sack? Just stuff it in here.

Not enough room inside? This pack has plenty of external straps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sleeping bag compartment way too small, April 24, 2012
By

First off, the construction quality and materials are far superior to other backpacks I've tried. You really get what you pay for.

However....For a backpack this size, I have to wonder why the sleeping bag compartment is so small.

I have a Wiggy's SuperLight for cold weather, and a Coleman Peak mummy for warm weather that I have no intention to replace. Even with compression sacks, neither bag will fit in the sleeping bag compartment. A huge disappointment.

The Coleman is roughly 10" diameter, 17" long when reasonably compressed. It won't fit.

The compartment is just not "tall" or "deep" enough, although it it certainly "wide" enough. I think it's technically possible to cram one of the bags in, but it would be incredibly difficult, would require compressing the bags to the max that the compression straps/buckles would allow, and would ultimately put a lot of strain on the compartment and zipper. I suspect the compartment seams / stitching... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Defective hip strap, September 25, 2011
By

This backpack seemed to have everything I wanted for a major backpacking trip: space, pockets, front/side access to the main compartment. It was one of only a few backpacks this size (the other being the Kelty Red Cloud), and it even looks good aesthetically.

But the backpack failed on Day One. The plastic in the hip strap is brittle, and the way it is constructed (in an "X" pattern, presumably to save weight) makes is susceptible to fracturing. When we unloaded the pack (had not even hit the trail!), the left hip strap was cracking and the right hip strap had broken clear through into two pieces just held together by fabric. I was aghast that such an expensive and otherwise attractive new backpack could have such a poor design for an essential component like the hip strap. I've never seen this happen with another backpack (certainly not my old backpack, which lasted me 15 years), and I later found out that the reviews on REI.com are full of people with exactly this...
